Snake Identifier Privacy Policy
Thank you for using Snake Identifier ("the App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you use the App. By accessing or using the App you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please stop using the App.
Information We Collect
Information you provide
- Snake photos: When you capture or upload an image, the photo is temporarily stored on your device and sent to our analysis service for identification.
- Scan metadata: Each scan stores a generated identifier, timestamp, analysis results, species data, and progress state.
- Chat messages: Any questions you ask our in-app assistant are sent to OpenAI along with relevant scan context.
Automatically collected information
- App diagnostics: If the app encounters an error, limited diagnostic information may be written to local logs on your device so issues can be debugged during development and support.
- Purchase records: Subscription purchase and restore information is processed by Apple through StoreKit/App Store infrastructure. We do not directly process your payment card details.
We do not collect personal identifiers such as name, email, or precise location unless you voluntarily provide them via support correspondence.
How We Use Information
- Snake identification: We send snake images and related prompts to OpenAI's API to generate species identifications, venom profiles, and safety information.
- Feature delivery: App data is stored locally (AsyncStorage) so you can revisit previous identifications, your field guide entries, and chat transcripts.
- Subscription access: We use purchase state from Apple in-app purchases to unlock paid features and restore eligible purchases.
How We Share Information
- Service providers (OpenAI): Photos and prompts are transmitted to OpenAI for analysis. OpenAI processes data under its published API Terms. We do not sell or monetize your data.
- Apple: Subscription billing and related purchase history are handled by Apple under Apple's policies and terms.
We do not otherwise disclose your information to third parties except when required by law or to protect our rights.
Data Storage and Retention
- Snake photos are kept on your device and in memory only long enough to submit for analysis. We do not maintain a server-side gallery.
- Scan history, field guide entries, and generated analysis are stored locally on your device. You may clear your history at any time by deleting the App or using the delete options within the App.
- OpenAI may retain submitted API data according to OpenAI's current API data usage policies.
Your Choices
- Permissions: You can decline camera or photo library permissions. The App will continue to operate, but capture features will be disabled.
- Revoking access: You can revoke permissions via your device Settings at any time.
- Deleting data: Remove the App or clear history within the App to remove locally stored data.
Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such data, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use HTTPS for all network communication and rely on platform safeguards (iOS sandboxing) to protect local storage. However, no system is completely secure. Please notify us promptly of any suspected breach.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be communicated inside the App or on our website before they take effect.
